The ghost in the machine!! Live from SIHH the RM056

 By: 219 : January 16th, 2012-01:26
First pictures. Limited edition of 5 pieces. Tourbillon, split second chrono, reworked RM008. Crystal case. Got to give it to the man! Richard scores again! Unbelievable watch. Truly a ghost as you may not ever see it again! Andrew H This message has been...

i know a lot will rave over this watch but definetly not for me

Reminds me very much of the brand ToyWatch [nt]

Richard Mille booth for the whole day and anyone who saw the watch was wowed. No joke and not just saying that - it was one of the stars, if not THE star of SIHH 2012. However, with only 5 in existence, it will be difficult to pull off a sighting. I might...

An absolute work of art

It's interesting ...

but I think that I prefer the work on metal materials more than saphire for a case box. I'll be curious to have a look at it but not very attracted by it. Thanks for the live pics ! Best, Mark

I think it will be a safe queen - the problem with the case is

 By: 219 : January 16th, 2012-10:02
that it wont take knocks too well! And the cost of producing a new case would be prohibitive. Andrew H

Nice!!! But why the crystal case??? [nt]

not necessarily meant for everyday wear. often times these are what spark revolutions or stimulate evolutions.

nice piece of work

 By: dms : January 16th, 2012-07:13
but I must say I am not a fan at all... It reminds me of certain Swatch models with their transparent cases ... I admit there is more to admire in a RM008 movement than a cheap quartz movement, but I quite don't get the spirit behind it: a crystal case is...

In a sense you are right. However, I would argue that this watch

 By: 219 : January 16th, 2012-22:19
does push boundaries in what is possible. Remember that these are curved surfaces here with the tolerance and precision that is required to use sapphire crystal under such conditions. True, this is not a watch to wear playing sport, rock climbing, or any ...

Masterpiece....

 By: dms : January 17th, 2012-00:11
Reflecting on my earlier comment and yours, Andrew, I believe this has to be called a true masterpiece, in the old meaning of the word: "une piece de maitrise" as we say in French, which is a piece the craftsmen would do, typically at the end of their stu...

True - but it can be worn (it is a wrist watch after all) - but

 By: 219 : January 17th, 2012-12:07
in terms of your definition, you are correct. Richard is showing that he CAN! Thanks Andrew H

That is why I think it's extraordinary...

 By: pingtsai : January 18th, 2012-22:36
It's thinking outside of the box. True innovators are never bound by practicality and convention nor are they discouraged by setbacks....and I'm certain that there were more than a few with the production of this watch. I can imagine the person out there ...

Surprising piece

 By: cisco : January 16th, 2012-08:07
The RM008 is already a legend imho, this is a nice hommage to the "Grande Complication" of Richard Mille. What means "crystal" here ? "Sapphire" like the one used in some watches bridges ? cheers Francois

Yes - sapphire crystal - and the bridges would crack

 By: 219 : January 16th, 2012-10:05
so imagine the case.... and a curved case at that.... Andrew H

Thanks for the details Andrews !

 By: cisco : January 16th, 2012-10:55
I will take it as an hommage... To be honest I am not convinced even if it is a complicated watch to make and assemble. There is few thing really new there. It doesn't blow my mind as the firs RM008 did, or the RM027 "Nadal" or the RM009. This is just my ...

richard mille bail out

 By: edwardwchang : January 16th, 2012-09:32
Mssr. Mille can bail out the eurozone and save the euro currency by selling this watch to the chinese

Well it helps that Richard brings in foreign currency from the sale

of his watches. A number do go east! Thanks Andrew H

yeah

 By: gcTIME : January 17th, 2012-05:06
europe can sell a lot more than a watch and the chinese can buy much more than europe. is that the kind of comment you were trying to entice with your remark?

Technologically it is awsome....

what matters is execution - and here execution is at the very limits of what is possible. Andrew H

I agree, less is more...

 By: nautilus : January 18th, 2012-13:38
And RM watches demonstrate this with faultless execution. I love their watches and this one is very striking but it's not for me as it looks like a toy.

I am actually quite impressed.

 By: grigo : January 16th, 2012-12:16
I am sure that this is a huge technical achievement. I hope to see it in the flesh one day. Best regards, George

Thanks George - and yes, it is. Would be great to see you

Obviously not designed to be worn, more a demonstration of technical ability I guess. I wonder who made the case. 1.65 million dollars, or francs perhaps. Quite a lot. I imagine the act of buying one of these will erase about a million of those dollars. A...

The whole watch is Swiss made - including the case - Richard

This is very strange, impractical, etc. There is no objective good reason to owning this watch, it's probably even fragile to wear. But I like it! It's wonderfully different. Great job Monsieur Mille! Truly a piece of art!

+1..well put..

it was a frivolous post as commentary on what some might say is a frivolous watch.

Wow.

Saw the piece today, and all I can say is just : wow. Way better in the real than the photos show, believe ye me.

I know - as was my response! :) However, the watch is

 By: 219 : January 17th, 2012-12:04
far from frivilous - it is a remarkable piece. Generally I try to see a watch before passing judgement on whether I like or not. Not always possible, but I try. Everyone I witnessed looking at the watch was one of awe, not of contempt. Thanks! Andrew H

Looking forward to seeing it on Thursday :) [nt]

Hello Tom,

 By: BDLJ : January 17th, 2012-17:55
Obviously, there is a limit to what you can reveal, but is it possible for you to relate some of the challenges in manufature of such a case? Is it a forming issue? Achieving tolerances for snug case fit? Brittleness when screwing together?

All agreed and very interesting. If tom3 could share some further information

 By: 219 : January 18th, 2012-02:43
I for one would love to learn. What I know of the Richard Mille case is the following. As tom3 points out, there is an added complexity here in that the RM case is both curved, to very tight tolerances, and also machined and polished in 3 parts. See here ...
