5980 vs 5990

Jun 13, 2017,07:53 AM

Dear purists,

I am currently thinking of acquiring a new watch.  I am considering a Lange (Datograph Up/Down) or a Patek (5980/5990).  My question is if the Patek, would you guys recommend the 5980 or 5990?  Thoughts on the Pateks will be much appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Regards,

ILLUFA

I would go 5990, any day.

having said that I have a blue 5980/1A in my collection... but this was acquired way before 5990 was around my take otherwise is the 5990 is somewhat less sporty in character, a bit more formal and grown up. Perfect active travel companion. The other bene...

I own and wear both often. 5990 on the wrist for travel and 5980 for most other leisure time. I don't wear ether for dress, though I believe either could suit the purpose. My 5980/1A is a first-run reference (with Geneva seal, etc), therefore blue, and wi...

Like said, no right or wrong.

However, I like 5980 more especially with the blue dial. For me it's "more Nautilus". Best, Kari

A good question, and I will be very interested to read the responses.

I have a 5980, but I prefer the 5990 for the following reasons: - the bezel is a little thinner on the 5990, which allows the dial to be a little bigger - I find the chrono on the 5980 hard to read, the 5990 is more intuitive, although you do lose the 12h...

That's a nice project

I'm a fan of the Nautilus line-up and the 5990 is a reference I like for its dial color and decoration and the complication (made a clever way) for people who need it. However, I have a slight preference for the 5980 but this is just for subjective reason...

I have a similar dilemma...

Between 5990 and first Generation Dato and I decided to wait for awhile. I like both for certain reasons and in the end I still cannot make up my mind... I personally prefer the original Dato than the up/down version because of proportion, aesthetic and b...

Datograph is way more refined

PPs you mentioned are of no match to Datograph. Not in terms of movement nor in terms of aesthetics.

For what it is worth, I am exclusively a Patek and Lange collector so appreciate both brands immensely for different reasons. I will try to be as unbiased as I can be... The 5980 is a beautiful timepiece that will prove to be a good investment if bought a...

Tough choice

Hi Langeholic, I too am a Patek and Lange lover. My first "expensive" watch that I lusted after was the Lange 1 that I got in 2003 and still keeps. I had a Datograph before and love the movement. Its hard deciding between the two as both have their merits...

Neither PP nor Lange

Dear all, Thank you for giving thoughts on my previous dilemma. I finally pulled the trigger on a Richard Mille RM30 instead. Yes, its way off the original choices but life does throw a curve ball now and then. Didn't know I missed my carbon RM that much....

Indeed quite a change!

I like RMs a lot and the RM30 particularly. Enjoy your new watch and thanks for the feedback on your decision Best, Mark

I'm going to biased here...

I'll pick the 5980 for two reasons: One, I have the 5164 so another dual time may not be friendly to the bank account 😊 Two, I'm a sucker for sub dials at the six hour mark! 😬 Plus, both the 5164 and 5980 would look really good in my collection! Not that ...
